Introducing the Chaplain

Rev'd. Alison Finch

What is a Chaplain and what do we do?

  • We seek to bring a spiritual element into the workplace.
  • Our visits are organised with the agreement of the business management and staff.
  • We are independent of the businesses we visit.
  • The Chaplaincy service is open to all, whatever their denomination, faith or for those who have none.
  • We provide a confidential listening ear and ongoing care and support of personal or work related issues.
  • We seek to provide a forum to assist with engaging in spiritual, social and ethical questions, which arise in the working environment.
  • We seek to build bridges between the workplace and the church, so that each may understand and learn from the other.

I began my appointment as the Colchester Workplace Chaplain in May 2005, established with the support of Essex Churches Council for Industry and Commerce. I came to the post after 14 years experience in the Church, both as a vicar and Industrial Chaplain. Prior to ordination I was an Administrator and Finance Officer for a large charity. I was one of the first women priests in England in 1994.

Since moving to Colchester I have begun to meet and work alongside various groups, retailers and organisations, and I am now a Director with the Colchester Town Partnership.

Part of my role is to develop a team of Chaplains within the town centre. I look forward to meeting you.

    Support when needed

    The work place
Most of us spend the greater part of our day at work. The work we do, shapes our lives and develops us as human beings. In work, we look for a sense of belonging, we expect our work to provide a sense of purpose and involvement with others.

Sometimes work creates stress. The Chaplaincy can help.

    How we work
We are available to visit people in their workplace, or by an appointment outside their working hours.

    A listening ear
You can talk to us about personal problems, your family, or work-related issues. We provide an independent listening ear. Where agreed we can refer people to existing professional bodies.

    Liaison & Advocacy
Where invited, the Chaplaincy can be used to support staff, in areas of liaison & advocacy, particularly in times of change and crisis.

    Working within the community

    The Town Centre Community
Colchester town centre has a large and varied working community engaged mainly in retailing and office occupations, and has a lively nightlife. We have many shoppers who visit our town regularly and all ages are represented. The Chaplaincy is part of this vibrant community providing support to individuals, where and when it is needed.

    Town Centre Events
The Chaplaincy looks to participate and support religious events and celebrations within the town centre, working together with commercial managers, Local Authority personnel and Colchester Town Partnership.

    The Church Community
The Chaplaincy is part of the wider Church Community and works with all denominations and faiths.
